James Lockhart, born in Edinburgh, began his professional conducting career as assistant to Nicolai Maiko with the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra and later became assistant conductor of the BBC Scottish Orchestra. Following a period in continental opera houses, he was on the music staff of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Sadlers Wells Opera. Later, as a member of the conducting staff at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, he was awarded the Solti Scholarship for the most promising young British musician. His first major appointment was in 1968 as the Music Director of the emergent Welsh National Opera, and during his five years there he set the company on the road to international recognition. There followed another prestigious appointment as Generalmusikdirektor of the Staatstheater Kassel, where he became the first British conductor to hold such a position in a German opera house. He has toured in Canada with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, and in the US he has conducted the San Diego Opera and English National Opera during their historic visit to the Metropolitan Opera, New York.
