Notes & Reviews:

When it was first performed in 1910, Mahler's eighth symphony received a highly enthusiastic reception. In many ways, this composition, which he considered his magnum opus, takes up where Beethoven's ninth left off nearly a century before. Scored for an eight-part double choir, boys' choir, eight soloists and a huge orchestra including organ, the work gained its nickname "The Symphony of a Thousand" as indeed, 1,004 performers took part in its Munich premiere. In this recording led by Kent Nagano, the symphony's rich drama and fervid passion are revealed as never before.

"Nagano is blessed with a superb orchestra and choruses all on top form (the richness of sound in the hushed 'Alles Vergangliche', complete with subterranean basses, is wonderful)" -Daily Telegraph

"probably the best we have." - The Independent

"majestic performance under Kent Nagano, with superb soloists including sopranos Sylvia Greenberg, Lynne Dawson and Sally Matthews, altos Sophie Koch and Elena Manistana and tenor Robert Gambill. Mahler's masterwork emerges in all its rococo splendour, his rich orchestral textures and bold vocal writing adding up to a secular mass for our times." -The Observer
