Notes & Reviews:

A 10CD set that traces the development of the flute from a traverse one keyed instrument of the 18th century through to the 8 keyed early 19th century instruments and finally the modern Boehm flute we see in modern symphony orchestras which dates from the 1840s. The works on these CDs range from Vivaldi, Telemann and Alessandro Scarlatti's Barock concertos, to the early classical concertos of CPE Bach, and later works from the same century by the Czech Benda, Hoffmeister ( a contemporary of Haydn) and Danzi who's career spanned the late classical and early romantic periods. Mozart, who famously hated the flute nevertheless composed 2 quartets for the instrument and a concerto. He also adapted his oboe concerto to create a second concerto for flute - all of these are included here together with the charming concerto for flute and harp. The set concludes with a disc of showpieces for flute, including the 5 pieces for flute and orchestra by Goddard, and Chopin's Variations on a theme by Rossini. Other information * Performers include Peter-Lukas Graf with the English Chamber Orchestra under Raymond Leppard, Machiko Takahasi and the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, Ingrid Dingfelder and the ECO with Sir Charles Mackerras.
