Album Summary
Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
Once described by Pablo Casals as, "The greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart", George Enescu was more than a composer - he was a gifted musician (cello, piano, organ), vocalist, conductor and teacher. Recorded by members of the Schubert Ensemble, this disc contains richly textured, virtuosic, and highly individual piano quartets which contain characteristics of Mahler, Wagner and Ravel while also retaining the Romanian folk music influence which is so distinctly Enescu.
"They have performed these big-boned quartets and his Piano Quintet at Wigmore Hall and elsewhere, and this recording is further sumptuous advocacy." -The Sunday Times
