Notes & Reviews:

Starting with Franz Schubert's great ballad, "Der Taucher" ("The Diver"), based on Friedrich Schiller, Michael Volle leads the way through a program of lieder with Helmut Beutsch, that includes both well knows works by Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss and works by Hermann Reutter that are still awaiting a wider audience in the concert halls. Michael Volle was trained by Josef Metternich and Rudolf Piernay. He was a member of the ensemble at the opera houses of Mannheim, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Zurich. He is now permanently a member of the Bavarian State Opera.

American Record Guide
With fine performances by Volle and Deutsch and an imaginative selection of songs this is an exceptionally good recital... Volle modulates his robust and substantial voice nicely to fit the text, capturing the tenderness of 'An die Geliebte' and the snarling quality of Wolf's 'Zur Warnung'. Deutsch plays with authority and conviction and continues to demonstrate why he is so sought out as a collaborator in lieder.

Pizzicato
The multi-faceted, complex and differentiated program is designed by Michael Volle, thanks to its beautiful, warm and nuanced baritone voice extremely intelligent, varied and exciting. It is not only a German Helmut ideal companion, but the essential partner who knows how to listen both to the singer as he goes forward. A perfect song CD, therefore, the high deserves attention. She is also initiated by Schubert's 23:30 minutes long first setting of Schiller's 'Diver' D. 77, which was hardly ever recorded: Schubert had then not yet 18 years old. In the present complex and dramatic interpretation you realize all the pleasure of the two artists to throw himself into the music as sung by Schiller squire in the ocean depths. But as they do not sink, but bring pure musical gold to light.

Volle has an expansive, warmly generous voice and he sings with spontaneity and unaffected energy. His technique is secure throughout his wide range, and his obvious dramatic gifts are evident in his close attention to the texts. He's especially effective in coloring the (usually) subtle moods of the Wolf songs, and (except for a pitch glitch in "Vom künftigen Alter") Strauss' soaring lines. The exaggerated characterizations of his interpretation of Wolf's Abschied might seem extreme, but the approach suits the extreme silliness of the song. It's balanced by the measured dignity of his performance of Schubert's Wandrers Nachtlied that closes the album. (The included texts are in German only.) Pianist Helmut Deutsch provides a crisp, responsive, and understated accompaniment. Oehms' sound is clean, detailed, and intimate.
