This is the new Mahler lieder album of Austrian baritone Holzmair. His voice teacher Hilde Rössel-Majdan was herself a fine interpreter of Mahler songs. She encouraged him to study Mahler's setting of Rückert's poem Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (I am lost to the world). But his interest in Mahler's leader did not bloom fully until he began listening to the famous recordings made by Baker, Fassbaender, Fischer-Dieskau and others.

The sound is clear and well balanced. The notes are Holzmair's thoughts on Mahler and his history of performing these songs. No texts. For a baritone and piano account of these songs, you're best off turning first to Fischer-Dieskau with Barenboim (EMI) or Gerharer (M/A 2010). They both sing the Wayfarer and five Rnckert songs and a selection of other songs.
