Notes & Reviews:
Composer and percussionist Nathan Davis has released a recording of works commissioned and performed by the critically acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), of which he is also a prominent performing member. Mr. Davis' music is inspired by a percussionist's pragmatism: he approaches instruments with a beginner's mind, addressing them as objects and asking himself the basic question, "what sounds do they want to make?" The resulting works possess a freshness that resonates with the elemental world of the overtone series while exploring the rich diversity of the physical objects that articulate it. Davis' use of electronic processing, such as ring modulation and live manipulation, grows from his fascination with acoustic phenomena themselves, distinguishing him from many composers who use electronics to explore artificial capabilities. The five works on The Bright and Hollow Sky are a result of applying this organic process to Davis' close collaboration with ICE.
