Notes & Reviews:
With vol. 5, the Hamburg Philharmonic has concluded its recording of the group of Bruckner symphonies that have been passed down to us in several versions. The Hamburg Bruckner series, recorded live at the Laeiszhalle, has developed into one of the most important cycles and the strength of its interpretive independence is growing through the ongoing collaboration between the orchestra and its composer.
the delineation of the lines and the concrete and well-balanced orchestral body, coupled with Young's evident love of the music as demonstrated by the vigorous and lively tonal qualities more than make up for any lack of presence in one section.
La Scena Musicale
I was gripped by the energy and conviction of Simone Young's First Symphony with the Hamburg Philharmonic. The musicians give it all they've got, a little thin at the top of the strings but deeply satisfying in the adagio.
Recording information: Laeiszhalle Hamburg (01/2010).
The Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra gives a spirited performance under Simone Young's expert conducting. The tempo in the finale, marked "bewegt, feurig" (moving, fiery), is especially noteworthy, for the timing is 14:16, which is shorter than most versions. Moving and fiery it is indeed, and very exciting.
This new CD offers excellent sound, with minimal audience noise (this is a live recording).
