This performance admirably avoids the tendency in some young pianists to equate the seriousness of Beethoven with an assertive weight often verging on the percussive. MacEvoy's restrained approach captures the reverie-like contemplation of the opening movement, brings a light playfulness to an Alla Marcia that is more "Schumannesque" than many "thumping" approaches I have heard, and reveals the witty humor in the joyous final movement. His dynamics, moreover, rarely rise above a forte, making the full fortissimo in the climax of the fugal final movement all the more impressive.
