Notes & Reviews:

From a 1960 live performance in the Teatro Coḷn Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ponchielli's La Gioconda's libretto was written by composter Arrigo Boito who adapted it from a play by Victor Hugo. A quintessential operatic tale of thwarted love and devotion this performance features the American soprano Lucille Udovich, noted mezzo-soprano Mignon Dunn, longtime Metropolitan Opera member bass Norman Scott, and tenor Flaviano Labo with the Teatro Coḷn Orchestra and Choir conducted by Carlo Felice Cillario.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
This Gioconda, from Buenos Aires in 1960, finds both singers in excellent form. She has a strong top B and she always sounds fully immersed in the drama. She knows just how to shape the music (the last act trio with Laura and Enzo is particularly lovely), and she's always interesting to listen to. Labo's voice has the metal Enzo needs. He really sinks his teeth into his great melodies - the duet with Barnaba, the 'Gia ti Vedo' ensemble - and he delivers a strong, dreamy 'Cielo e Mar'. Aldo Protti is quite impressive, singing with great intensity in a robust baritone voice - quite a surprise. The excellent Mignon Dunn is a plush, sexy Laura; and the other singers are fine, especially Norman Scott as a weighty Alvise. Cillario is a solid conductor, and the sound is remarkably good.

There's a bonus. Subtract 49 minutes from the time given above. It's taken up by the first act of Madama Butterfly, with Labo as Pinkerton, Antonietta Stella as Butterfly, and Giuseppe Taddei as Sharpless, recorded at the Teatro Colon in 1958. Labo's Pinkerton has the same vocal virtues as his Enzo. Taddei is, predictably, an eloquent Sharpless. Stella was having quite a good day. The upper notes are lovely, the voice pours out easily, and the words are delivered with real personal involvement.
