Notes & Reviews:

Frank Ticheli's award-winning Symphony No. 2 has been described as 'uninhibited, high-flying and intensely rhythmic' (South Florida Sun-Sentinel).Angels in the Architecture was inspired by the forms and ornamentation of the Sydney Opera House, contrasting divine light with turbulent darkness to pose the unanswered question of existence. Ticheli is joined by his two major influences in first recordings of Pulitzer Prize-winning Leslie Bassett's terrific Nonet and the potent messages of 2007 Musical America Composer of the Year William Bolcom's First Symphony for Band.

A strong addition to the Wind Band Classics Series, this program features premiere recordings which include the major new First Symphony for Band by one of our most acclaimed living composers William Bolcom, as well as reviving the unjustly neglected Nonet by Leslie Bassett. Frank Ticheli's superbly idiomatic writing has a distinctive character and wide appeal, already represented by an impressive taster: Wild Nights! (8.572129). Dr. Reed Thomas's highly respected Tennessee players respond to all of these fine and substantial scores with verve and aplomb.

Ritmo
Equally interesting may be opening their ears to a compendium of so different that we have a tradition in Spain, especially if you can enjoy with musicians of such high level as in the United States. Another thing is the real value of the selected works, beyond a purely educational approach. Nevertheless edition, in the context discussed, no doubt has a reasonable value.

Fanfare Magazine, September/October 2012
The Middle Tennessee State Wind Ensemble demonstrates itself to be a highly accomplished group, fully capable of standing toe-to-toe with our nation's most esteemed university wind bands. Ensemble intonation, precision, and balance are excellent, and conductor Reed Thomas delivers convincing interpretations of the four works. This release is part of Naxos's valuable Wind Band Classics series.
