Of Minutiae and Memory: works by Penman, Clyne, Matthusen, et al. / Jody Redhage, cello

Notes & Reviews:

As the recipient of the 2005 Hertz Grant, Jody began developing of her "singing cellist" project--writing and also commissioning a repertoire for her voice and cello from some of New York's most talented emerging composers. She went into the recording studio in the summer of 2006, and the first CD culmination of this commissioning/recording project, originally released in 2007 on New Amsterdam records, has been called "a freewheeling, slightly edgy and altogether "different" kind of musical experience... highly rewarding and worthwhile" (Dave Lewis, All Music Guide). Jody has been in the recording studio off and on again over the past year, recording more pieces for her voice, cell and electronics. The updated album, of minutiae and memory (featuring a few tracks from the original 2007 release and many new compositions) is the compelling result. The album includes eight immersive, nuanced premiere recordings of compositions from some of today's most talented young indie classical composers: Missy Mazzoli, Anna Clyne, Stefan Weisman, Paula Matthusen, Wil Smith, and Joshua Penman. Redhage is currently on tour with 2011 Best New Artist Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding's Chamber Music Society. "A new music dynamo...Redhage is cultivating a growing repertoire of indie art song that breaches genre boundaries and makes for stirring listening." -Musicworks Magazine
