Notes & Reviews:

With the recordings of Peter Tchaikovsky's First and Fourth Symphonies, Christoph Poppen and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie have already demonstrated their ability to lend these popular works a unique, almost chamber-musical quality. Naturally, however, an ensemble like the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie is capable of developing pure power and lavish splendor at any time, so that nothing can stand in the way of an exhilarating Tchaikovsky experience. The orchestra came into being in 2007 when the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken was combined with the Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern. GMD Christoph Poppen melded the two ensembles into one homogeneous and flexible group that carries on the tradition of its two predecessors.

... Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathétique,"... receives a passionate reading in this 2011 album by Christoph Poppen and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, and all the despondency of the work is generously expressed, along with the fragile delicacy of the Allegro con grazia and the brutal force of the Allegro molto vivace. The live performance is committed and energetic, and the orchestra produces a warm tone in the mainstream tradition, with strings that throb and winds that practically sigh with despair. Oehms' sound is vibrant and spacious, and remarkably noise-free for being live recordings.

... in the new Oehms recording of Tchaikovsky's "Pathétique" symphony... strings are silky-smooth, the brass warm and prominent, the woodwinds just piquant enough for this music. The first movement emerges from the bassoon depths feelingly... the playing is clean, the lines clear and the orchestral balance excellent. Tchaikovsky's themes come through with great beauty and considerable subtlety in this reading...
