Notes & Reviews:
Aram Khachaturian' s music is a sort of chronicle of his time and his motherland; it is an enthusiastic tale of the life of his country, built right before the artist' s eyes. Symphony No. 1 (1934), dedicated to the 15th anniversary of Soviet Armenia, was the composer' s diploma thesis. The Concerto-Rhapsody for cello was written in a burst of inspiration in a free developing form similar to Chausson' s Poeme and Ravel' s Gitana for violin. The composer found quite a rigid structure that connected the principle of rhapsodic development of music based on a free flight of fantasy with important elements of sonata style that add a clear logic of symphonic thinking to the whole.
