Notes & Reviews:

In reaction to the death of his daughter, Josefa, Antonín Dvorák began to sketch his Sabat Mater "as a souvenir to the friend of his young days." (Dvorák) His first work on a religious theme, it is brought to life again today through an outstanding performance by the English Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Rafael Kubelík. Also included are Dvorák's Serenade for Strings.

"Dvorak's large and infrequently performed setting combines a sense of drama with a heightened sense of personal grief. Smetácek retains the work's spirit." -BBC Music Magazine

"Kubelik does the [Serenade] very beautifully." -Gramophone
