Notes & Reviews:

EMI Classics celebrates the 75th birthday of the inimitable Steve Reich, hailed by the New York Times as "our greatest living composer," with a new album from the London Steve Reich Ensemble, an exciting young group dedicated to the composer's music and heartily endorsed by Reich himself. The album features one of Reich's most popular pieces - the Grammy award-winning Different Trains, a piece which traces his childhood coast-to-coast US train trips during World War II, juxtaposing them with the very different trains Jews were being forced to ride in Europe at the same time. The music features various recordings - including holocaust survivors discussing their experiences and the sounds of trains from the 30s and 40s - along with strings imitating the speech melodies and mechanical noises. The album also features the Bartok-inspired "Triple Quartet" and the world-premiere recording of "Piano Counterpoint", arranged by Vincent Corver from "Six Pianos."

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
As before, all the playing demonstrates the highest degree of artistic excellence, professional commitment, and musical excitement. In Piano Counterpoint, Corver strategically sets some of Reich's music (and its resultant patterns) in higher registers, which lightens the texture considerably without robbing the music of its rhythmic verve and intensity (something that Reich's literal transcription for six marimbas doesn't achieve). Corver understands the performance style of Reich's music perfectly, but manages somehow to inflect this style with unmistakable personality of his own. Kevin Griffiths, the ensemble's conductor and artistic director, guides the strings with similar insight and devotion; given the difficulty of reconciling the rhythmic accuracy of 16 string instruments with spoken speech that was never meant to be musically performed, it's no small feat. All in all, this is an important release by an ensemble that demonstrates, once again, that the future of Steve Reich's music is in very good hands.
