Jean Françaix's music represents a rare combination: it is modern and intelligible. When he penned his Wind Quintet No. 1 shortly after World War II, he was already a world-famous composer whose clear, constructive musical idiom had made him a real people-pleaser.

Françaix's L'heure du Berger sextet might be described as a musical curio cabinet. This smart composition for five wind instruments and piano portrays an odd cast of characters in intimate situations: pin-up girls, old dandies, and nervous youths. A delightful musical mosaic of fine-tooled irony.
