Great Singers Live: Lucia Popp / Arias by Stolz, Lehar

Lucia Popp is one of the best-documented and most versatile singers of her generation. Because of her linguistic and stylistic flexibility she was able to sing a very wide range of repertoire. Her acting talent was extraordinary as well. Before she began her vocal studies she had studied medicine and drama and acted in a number of movies. This new release shows a richly varied program with soprano arias by Mozart to Weber and Rossini all the way to Lehár and Stolz taken from concerts given in 1968 to 1982.

It makes for a satisfying mix of opera and operetta... I have been delighted with all four releases in the BR Klassik series 'Great Singers Live' and found this Lucia Popp collection enjoyable and compelling.

This new disc, part of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra's "Great Singers Live" label, provides a pleasant picture of Popp's lovely work in various kinds of opera and operetta literature. Popp's silvery tone proves ideal in two German Romantic arias, a pleasant piece from Lortzing's 1845 Undine and -nnchen's Act II arietta from Der Freischntz. She aces two lightweight arias by Robert Stolz and Lehßr's compelling "Liebe, du Himmel auf Erden," from 1925's Paganini.

The touching Act III aria of Smetana's Marenka... is absolutely ravishing, as near to an ideal performance as can be imagined.
