Notes & Reviews:

"My purpose is to create music not for snobs, but for all people; music which is beautiful & healing - to attempt what old Chinese painters called 'spirit resonance' in melody & sound" A. Hovhaness. Heralded by a New York Times article appearing August 28, 2011 - honoring the centenary year of Hovhaness' birth - Delos celebrates this wonderfully eclectic "American Mystic's" glowing niche in the pantheon of American musical history from a new angle: Hovhaness as a composer of what we now call "world music" ... though on a more exalted plane than most of that genre's content.

"This new Delos CD is a beautiful collection of meditations, some intimate, some more monumental (it might sound antithetical but Hovhaness is that good). On the intimate side, one finds the delightful 4 Bagatelles, Op. 30, or his String Quartet No. 2, Op. 147 (only two movements are available: I and V). Performed impeccably by the Shanghai Quartet, the Bagatelles are evocative miniatures (3 min for the longest) reminiscent of Eastern folk themes or even lullabies. The two movements taken from the second string quartet composed in 1966 are somehow bolder and more spiritual albeit still modal in essence... American Mystic is a great tribute to Hovhaness’s music and a necessary addition to one’s music collection. Delos worked very closely with the composer over the years and I feel that most of these versions can be seen as reference recordings." -Chamber Musician Today

The music of Hovhaness is often more interesting than emotionally gripping, but the performers on this Delos disc certainly play it with understanding and enthusiasm ...

Many of the performances are superb. Gerard Schwarz's Seattle Symphony handles the not inconsiderable technical challenges of Hovhaness' orchestral music (quiet percussion patterns against perfectly smooth pianissimo strings), and best of all are members of the Ohio State University Concert Band under conductor Keith Brion in the jewel-like short movements of this work. Highly recommended as an introduction to Hovhaness or for anyone intrigued with this fascinating composer.
