Notes & Reviews:

The 'Trout' Quintet, composed in 1819, during a happy period in Schubert's life. He spent holiday with friends in Steyr, south of Linz, & lodged at the house of Sylvester Paumgartner, mine owner & amateur cellist. Paumgartner suggested that Schubert compose a piano quintet along the lines of one composed by Hummel in 1802 (Op.87, for piano, violin, viola, cello & double bass). If it was Paumgartner's suggestion to incorporate the song 'Die Forelle' (The Trout) it was an inspired one.
