Notes & Reviews:

One of the most accomplished and influential Portuguese composers of the twentieth century, Luís de Freitas Branco brought the influence of César Franck to his native Lisbon with his Sonata No. 1, scandalizing his conservative elders with the work’s harmonic language and evolving tonality. The high romance and dreamy flow of this first sonata and that of the gorgeous Prelude both contrast with the neo-classical clarity of the Sonata No. 2, which dates from the composer’s second creative period. Freitas Branco’s Four Symphonies and several other orchestral works have been released on Naxos to great critical acclaim.

Ritmo
Throughout his compositional career Freitas will be discussed between the Latin and Germanic spirit. Very expressive interpretation of Portuguese violinist, born in Coimbra, Carlos Damas, accompanied on piano by Polish Anna Tomasik. The melodic line so generous de Freitas is well supported by both performers. Freitas is a composer of difficult typecasting what was happening in literature Pessoa, it is still considered a true paradigm of the twentieth century Portuguese composition.

Classical Lost and Found
Mr. Damas playing is both sensitive and enthusiastic... Ms. Tomasik holds everything together with her technically accomplished, confident accompaniment.

MusicWeb International
Damas plays with touchingly vulnerable sensitivity. Tomasik is in total sympathy with him. The balance between the two is pretty much equal.
