International chess virtuoso François-André Danican Philidor's fortunes as a musician at the court of Versailles were transformed when he turned his attention to the new genre of opéracomique. Sancho Pança, gouverneur dans l'isle de Barataria derives from Cervantes's famous novel Don Quijote, covering Sancho Panza's adventures as governor of a fictitious island on which a succession of characters plot to cure him of his delusions of grandeur. Opera Lafayette's production of this comedy revue is a 'sparkle of shining surfaces'. (Washington Post)

The singers are a worthy lot, producing charming, witty, authentic interpretations to be enjoyed over and over again.
Frantois-AndrT Danican Philidor occupies a modest place in the history of music than anything reminiscent of the successful comic opera composer was at the French court of the mid-eighteenth century. Master of chess, tireless traveler whose life adventure is quite novel, Philidor did not possess the inspiration of genius, but he was a composer of merit. At least, that print conveys his opTra bouffon Sancho Panca. the recording, made after the corresponding representations in the Kennedy Center in Washington, is provided by Opera Lafayette and a cast of famous voices of strangers with discrete volume and timbre that highlights generic Darren Perry as Sancho. All are led by Ryan Brown, who know the style shows and extracts all the charm of a score that, without great fanfare, will satisfy the most curious oper=filos.
The music is taut, descriptive and sung by Opera Lafayette with modest emotional coloring that comfortably exemplifies the point.-Darren Perry impresses the absurdities of Sancho Panta without overstepping boundaries. During the duel with Don Crispinos, "Une, deux", both Perry's and Tony BouttT's voices mesh with an aesthetic flair. Elizabeth Calleo measures precision and unblemished clarity as Sancho's wife, ThTrFse. The vocal acumens of Meghan McCall as Juliette are sweet, lyrical and pristine, particularly in her aria, "Je vais seulette" where she executes the most marvelous acciaccaturadynamics. One can hear strains of Mozart permeating the score, well highlighted in Sancho's 'ball' aria, "Je suis comme une pauve boule." The orchestra plays an integral part in magnifying the singers' feelings; their execution is excellent and demonstrably clear.Philidor's Sancho Panta is brilliantly captured. The acoustics are stellar and even more so when listening on headsets... Highly recommended.
the music... bubbles along pleasantly and has just the effect of lighthearted entertainment that the composer intended; soprano Meghan McCall... is particularly well-suited to the comic banter. Opera Lafayette's exceptionally idiomatic approach to this and the other works,that the opera world has far more to it than most operagoers realize...
A delightful one-act opera buffa, brought vividly to life by this young American team...Stylish playing and singing, thoroughly recommended at budget-price.
