To distinguish it from Haydns other masses, this work came to be known as the "Harmoniemesse", on account of what was for those days an unusually large number of wind instruments (1 flute, 2 of each other instrument: oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet). The aging 70-year old Haydn forsook the opera-like style of his earlier works & blended symphonic & vocal possibilities to produce one of the greatest masses of all time which had considerable influence on Beethoven & Schuberts masses.
