Notes & Reviews:
La Scala, 1956 - On the 19th of January Maria Callas returned to La Scala in the role of Violetta. Following the success of the previous year with Di Stefano, this time Gianni Raimondi awaited her on stage. Maestro Carlo Maria Giulini was conducting and the director was Luchino Visconti, who had already worked with the Divine on La Vestale. It was an unrepeatable artistic occasion. The future Nobel prize winner Eugenio Montale who was present spoke of "almost too much brilliance". Teatro alla Scala Memories presents the images and sounds from that night in the elegant book/CD set.
American Record Guide, September / October 2012
There are several recordings of Traviata by Callas, mostly from stage performances. This one is from January 19, 1956 at La Scala. It was opening night of the second year of the now fabled production by Luchino Visconti. It was the same cast as the previous year except for Giuseppe Di Stefano (Alfredo), who declined to appear. His replacement was a very young tenor, Gianni Raimondi, in his La Scala debut. The stars were in alignment both on stage and in the heavens, producing a sublime performance.
