The four new CD sets star such legendary singers as Roberta Peters, Ezio Pinza, Lily Pons, Risë Stevens, and Richard Tucker, conducted by podium icons such as Fritz Reiner and Pierre Monteux. Sony Classical's series of releases from the Met archives – now totaling 24 titles on CD and DVD – has earned praise far and wide for making great vintage live performances available in the best possible sound. Encapsulating his enthusiastic anticipation of the must-have gems in this series, Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times wrote: "The CDs that plumb the Met's archives are the big news. . . I'd better start making room on my shelves."
First official, remastered CD and digital release: These historic performances, originally broadcast via the Metropolitan Opera's Saturday afternoon radio series, have never before been available in authorized versions. Sony Classical continues to present the first commercial releases of this invaluable material, newly remastered from the original sources and with the imprimatur of the Met.
DONIZETTI: LA FILLE DU RÉGIMENT, December 28, 1940 (two CDs; UPC: 88697961912). Beloved soprano Lily Pons was at her most charming and vivacious in this performance, her house role debut as the titular heroine, Marie, and her only Met broadcast in the role. The cast for this centennial production of Donizetti’s opera also includes Raoul Jobin as Tonio, Salvatore Baccaloni as Sulpice, and Irra Petina as the Marquise of Bernkenfield. Gennaro Papi leads the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus. For this run of performances, Pons interpolated one of her signature arias, “Toi par qui mon coeur rayonne,” originally from the French version of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, into the third act. In his New York Times review, Olin Downes captured the enthusiastic audience reaction to this World War II-era performance: “[Pons] waved the French colors at the end, to the tune of the Marseillaise, and brought the audience up standing."
