Notes & Reviews:

Famed today as one of the 20th century's great symphonists, and composer of one of the greatest cycles of string quartets, he was also a prolific composer of songs, setting Russian, British, and Japanese poems to text. This album features a fascinating program of song cycles for bass and piano performed by Russian musicians. While the title "Romances" suggests idyllic meandering melodies, Shostakovich constructs layers of emotions, from innocent beauty to irony and despair.
