Notes & Reviews:
Born in Vienna, 1870, Oscar Straus would not only conquer England and the USA with Chocolate Soldier, after a comedy by G.B. Shaw but through this dramaturgically new musical form, is considered to be a pioneer of the Musical. In his music there are plenty of evergreens, from operetta, from movies, lots of chansons and songs! "It is true," he once said, "I am writing popular tunes to be chanted in the streets, but only in the choicest of streets."
An excellent one: the operetta is brimming with luscious tunes, well-made ensembles and effective duets, and all come across very well indeed in a spirited romp whose music flows with delight... well-deserved boost for home listeners and will hopefully keep some wonderful music alive.
The big hit of the show is the well-known and popular waltz song, 'Komm, komm, Held meiner TrSum'. Here it is sung most beguilingly by sweet-voiced Caroline Stein as Nadina. The Act I ensemble song with comic material for the soldiers searching for Bumerli and an interpolated stirring patriotic song lustily sung by Nadina is a highlight - so, too, is the following charming waltz-song trio for Nadina, Mascha and Aurelia They sing 'Tiralala' as all besotted, they dream of their Chocolate soldier. This number has some lovely orchestral felicities in the strings and woodwinds. Conductor, K÷hler consistently delivers telling sentimental and witty accompaniments to all the numbers. A charming recording of a delightful operetta.
