Dances to a Black Pipe - works for solo clarinet by Copland, Brahms, Piazzolla, Lutoslawski et al. / Martin Frost, clarinet

Notes & Reviews:

Martin Fröst isn't just one of the major clarinetists of our time - he is also an intrepid adventurer who challenges conventional notions of how classical music should be presented in the concert hall. He has played Bach-Gounod's Ave Maria while doing figures-of-eight on roller-skates, performed the part of dancing soloist (wearing a bird's mask) in Anders Hillborg's clarinet concerto Peacock Tales, and is constantly giving new proof of his curiosity when it comes to repertoire that defies genres. True to form, he here presents, with the internationally acclaimed Australian Chamber Orchestra, a wide-ranging selection of works which are all related to dance.

Hillborg has made a chamber version, previously unrecorded, of his acclaimed concerto, while his colleague Fredrik Högberg has composed Dancing with Silent Purpose, a work which in concert is performed against a back-drop projection of a choreographic video. Göran Fröst, the brother of the soloist, has arranged a selection of Brahms' ever-popular Hungarian Dances for clarinet and strings, and has also composed Klezmer Dances, with elements of Eastern European klezmer music. These Swedish composers are joined by international masters such as Lutoslawski, who based his Dance Preludes on rhythms from Polish folk music, and Aaron Copland, whose Clarinet Concerto was composed for Benny Goodman, 'the King of Swing'. Not forgetting the great Latin American dance tradition, Martin Fröst also performs the infinitely expressive Oblivion by the giant of modern tango, Astor Piazzolla.

Pizzicato
Quite different Fredrik H÷gbergs highly imaginative piece of 'Silent Dancing with Purpose' for clarinet strings and tape. In this wild piece puts real wit, wit and irony, brilliantly made and sound very appealing.

The Independent on Sunday, January 2012
Performed in both the original and revised versions, Copland's hot, slick Clarinet Concerto bookends a programme that incorporates waltz, schmaltz, tango and klezmer. Not all of it works. Brahms's Hungarian Dances are downgraded to vehicle status as a showcase for Fröst's dexterity. But elsewhere (Piazzola, Hillborg, Högberg) soloist and orchestra sizzle.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2012
Almost every piece is a novelty in Martin Fröst's dance-themed programme...This partnership of soloists and orchestra is an inspired one, not least in the smaller-scale pieces...There is a quirky and highly personal essay in lieu of booklet-note from Fröst himself.

International Record Review, February 2012
No point in pulling my punches: this is a wonderful disc. The playing is superb, and these dance-inspired pieces will put a skip in your own step...It's obvious that Frost and his Australian colleagues must have had enormous fun recording this programme and their enjoyment bubbles through at every turn. Frost's virtuosity is a delight in its own right, but it's deployed in the service of unquenchable good humour.
