Notes & Reviews:

American pianist Katchen (1926 - 69) was a child prodigy. At 11, he performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy. His technique was 'gold plated' and despite his early death at aged 43 from cancer, he had a large discography which still sells today. This CD includes a rare interview with Amis where Katchen discusses his early life including his thoughts on interpreting Mozart and Brahm's. These recordings have never been previously released.

American Record Guide
Katchen was one of our finest Brahms pianists from the 1950s up to his death from cancer in 1969... a very fine performance, alternating nicely between raw virtuosity and a brooding, ruminating quality that brings out the depth of Brahms's thinking... The playing is very romantic and secure... A welcome release, particularly for Katchen's fans.

Gramophone
Brahms was at the heart of Katchen's extensive repertoire and, finely partnered by Rudolf Kempe and the BBC SO, his unflagging brio and impetus are complemented by a moving and overtly emotional response to this daunting masterpiece. This record is a reminder and a remembrance of a tragic loss but an indelible musical force.

La Scena Musicale
This London studio performance with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Rudolf Kempe is a good reminder of [Julius Katchen's] exceptional gift.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2012
Every bar of Chopin's Third Ballade is illuminated by his stylistic luxuriance and audacity (try the tumultuous rush and glitter in the final bars) and even when almost engulfed by his own virtuosity, his performance of Liszt's First Mephisto Waltz is arguably the most wildly exciting on record....This record is a reminder and a remembrance of a tragic loss but an indelible musical force.
