Notes & Reviews:

The principal champion pre-Colin Davis of Hector Berlioz's neglected 19th c. masterpiece Les Troyens was Rafael Kubelík. This Milan 1960 recording - now back in the catalog - is a remarkable sound document. The sound is basic; there are cuts; and it's in Italian rather than the original French. But it also makes for electrifying listening. Kubelík conducts with intensity and dignity. Featuring a cast that includes Mario Del Monaco, Giulietta Simionato and the under-represented on disc Nell Rankin, it's essential listening for anyone with an interest in Berlioz. - The Guardian, 2012

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
Kubelik is an experienced and skilled opera conductor. The performance is in Italian. If you have a good modern performance. You will have Berlioz's sound in your ears from them and enjoy what you can hear of the outstanding singing of Del Monaco, Rankin, and Simionato. The Del Monaco "recital" has some compelling singing in mediocre sound. Back in the 1950s and 1960s he was an exclusive Decca artist. He sang Lohengrin, Siegmund, Samson, and (of course) Aeneas in performance. He never got the chance to record them in the studio. So this is a document for dedicated fans of the singers.
