Lancino: Requiem / Murphy, Gubisch, Skelton, Courjal [Blu-ray audio]

Album Summary

>Lancino, Thierry : Requiem, for chorus
Performer Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Thierry Lancino's vast Requiem is a challenging and eloquent contemplation on human mortality which the composer describes as 'both an epic fresco and sacred ceremony'. In a paradox which brings the Christian into dialogue with the Pagan, Lancino presents an exploration of Death and Time which is both human and relevant, as well as posing eternal and unanswerable questions. This recording captures a unique and moving event, performed by a stellar cast of artists and France's leading choir and orchestra. Since winning first prize in the Cantelli Conducting Competition at the age of 26, Eliahu Inbal has enjoyed a lucrative career, conducting leading orchestras in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and making regular appearances at international festivals. Inbal became the chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic in 2009.

BBC Music Magazine
In surround, the experience is exhilarating when the chorus and sizeable orchestra are given full rein, but there is also the frisson that comes from hearing so many people singing and playing in a whisper. Moreover, this music is worth hearing.

International Record Review
The leading Peter Grimes of our day, [Skelton] has no difficulty with the taxing tessitura...Lancino's Requiem is an inventive and impressive achievement..The impressive playing of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France is matched by fervent singing from the Choeur de Radio France.

Radio France
The composer Thierry Lancino I was impressed by his sense of drama and quality of his music during the creation in 1991 at the Festival Musica Strasbourg Das Narrenschiff for soprano and nine players on texts taken from "The Ship of Fools" Sebastian Brant. Reminds us that his resume was for nine years composer-scholar in residence at IRCAM from 1981 to 1988, and this means especially in the beautiful orchestration constructivist Sanctus succeeding the equally masterful "Song of the Sibyl" interpreted by mezzo-soprano Nora Gubish.
