All the works on this 2-CD set were recorded live between 1943 and 1956 and have been remastered. Of special note is the Harris Symphony No. 7 as it is the sole surviving recording of the work in its original version.
American Record Guide, September / October 2012
This is a very felicitous Stokowski release. The conductor, ever a champion of novelty, was in a particularly experimental humor in the 1940s and 50s, a time when symphonic composition itself was unfolding in unexpected ways. We begin with Stravinsky's backwards-looking, neoclassical Symphony in C, given a distinctly cool response by the NBC studio audience, pass on to the Sibelius and Shostakovichinflected symphonies by Hanson and Harris, and from thence to Hindemith, figuring as the herald of minimalism, the surrealist landscape of Hartmann's adagio, and conclude with the then-outrageously ethnic third symphony of Alan Hovhaness. Quite a range!
