Notes & Reviews:

It is not known for sure why Haydn chose the flute over the more usual violin in these three trios. Possibly it was to appeal to English or aristocratic taste for the instrument. Whatever the reason, there is no lessening of his profuse lyricism and contagious wit in these charming works. Both the D major and G major Trios end with virtuosic and witty pay-offs, whilst the F major is rather different; a more symphonically oriented work that fuses seriousness and fun in equal measure. Uwe Grodd first gained worldwide recognition when he won First Prize at the Cannes Classical Awards 2000, for the Best 18th Century Orchestral Recording with his CD of Symphonies by JB Vanhal (8.554341). Two further recordings of music by Hummel have been the Gramophone Editor's Choice in 2004 (8.557193) and 2008 (8.557845).

The New Zealand Herald
Grodd has a way with semiquavers, whipping them through the texture with an elegant nonchalance; all three musicians enjoy the insinuating chromaticism that occasionally snakes through the otherwise unruffled major ambience.
