His Best Arias Including Five Previously Unreleased Songs
Salvatore Licitra was one of the leading tenors of his generation before his tragic death in 2011 at age 43. As a tribute to this exceptionally gifted and endearing artist, Sony Classical proudly releases a 2-CD set of his best arias and songs available now. The recording includes operatic selections from Verdi, Puccini, Ponchielli, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Giordano as well as beloved Italian songs recorded with Marco Armilliato and The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Completing the Best of Salvatore Licitra collection are five previously unreleased tracks, “Funiculì Funiculà,” “Ideale,” “Non t'amo più,” “Non ti scordar di me,” and “O sole mio.”
In May 2002, Salvatore Licitra made a spectacular leap to international stardom when he replaced Luciano Pavarotti at the eleventh hour in a Metropolitan Opera performance of Tosca. The then 33-year-old tenor’s portrayal of Mario Cavaradossi was hailed by The New York Times critic Anthony Tommasini as “a star-is-born triumph.” Subsequently, Licitra won huge acclaim in the world’s most prestigious opera houses; in his last two seasons he had starring roles at the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala, as well as in Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Verona, Rome, Florence, Palermo and Vienna opera houses. Beloved by audiences, he possessed the irrepressible vitality and generous spirit exemplified by his illustrious Italian predecessors: from Enrico Caruso and Beniamino Gigli to Giuseppe di Stefano and Luciano Pavarotti.
