Notes & Reviews:
Vol. 2 features Gebel's Cantatas from the 1747-48 cycle that he wrote for church services on New Year's Day and the 1st Sunday after Epiphany. These large-scale Christmas cantatas appear for the 1st time on CD. Once again, as in the St John Passion (also released by CPO), we admire the unparalleled harmonies, modern melodies and artfully intricate counterpoint of Gebel's distinctive and novel idiom.
American Record Guide, November/December 2012
Gebel's musical idiom is rooted in baroque compositional techniques, but his artistic personality is very different from JS Bach. Many places remind me of the music of CPE Bach, as for example, the abrupt phrase endings in the lively tenor aria 'Mein Bester Schmuck' from Mein Jesu A und O. Remy founded Les Amis de Philippe in 1993 especially to perform the works of CPE Bach, so it is not surprising that he is attracted to these fine musical rarities by that composer's highly gifted contemporary. Listeners who admire CPE Bach's works will certainly want to hear these cantatas, especially in such excellent performances. The soloists sing with complete technical assurance and artistic aplomb, and the instrumental playing leaves nothing to be desired.
MusicWeb International, November 2012
The performances are pretty much ideal. The cantatas are performed with one voice per part; only in the first cantata four ripienists are used in the chorales and choruses...This disc once again proves the commanding qualities of Georg Gebel the Younger as a composer of sacred music.
