Notes & Reviews:

Ever since the late 17th century, Christmas music, especially in the form of cantatas and motets, had been a Neapolitan tradition. Durante continued this tradition with a series of vocal compositions designated by him as "Pastorale pieces" in order to indicate their relation to the Feast of Christmas and the shepherds in the field and manger. The Magnificat in B flat major is the best known, most beloved, most performed, and most recorded work by him among these on Vol. 1 of his Neapolitan Christmas compositions.

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
This is an excellent recording and it offers a needed antidote to the preponderance of Lamentations by Durante that have been released previously (July/Aug 1996, May/June 1998, Sept/Oct 1999). While a chamber choir would have added to the quality of this recording, especially in the two Magnificats, it might not have balanced with the small orchestra in the two pastoral compositions. This is significant repertoire, and these musicians would do well to delve into Durante's other sacred compositions.

MusicWeb International, November 2012
Considering the fact that so little of Durante's vocal oeuvre has been recorded these discs are most welcome. In particular those who like to hear something less conventional during Christmastide should investigate these discs.
