Notes & Reviews:

Typically minimalist, Anton Webern summed up each of Zemlinsky's four quartets with single word descriptions. "Aufbruch" (departure) corresponded to No.1 and getting out from under Brahms' shadow. "Wende" (the turning point) described No.2, an Expressionistic work of Mahlerian proportions. His choice for No.3 was "Reduktion" with its burlesque, sardonic wit, and "Maskenspiel" (mask game) described No.4, a 'lyric suite' in homage to Alban Berg. On this SACD from Praga, the Zemlinsky Quartet offers definitive readings of the second and fourth quartets.
