Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposersNotes & Reviews:
Even well into the 19th century, Eccard of Muhlhausen was celebrated as an "ideal composer of true church music". Brahms, placed his works on par with those of Gabrieli and Schutz. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of his birth, CPO joined forces with the city of Muhlhausen to present a many-faceted CD portrait of this early master that sheds light on the sharply contrasting genres of his output - from the marvelous 5-voice Mass to such popular song collections as the Preussische Festlieder.
Fanfare Magazine - Henry Lebedinsky
The special charm of Nights in the Gardens of Spain is its ability to seduce and hypnotize the listener with stillness, with sounds rustling in the bushes, and the heady fragrance of night jasmine. The more rhetorical moments in the music soar on horns or trumpets - but are then lost in the vagueness and mystery of the dark. All is suggestion. And as it is performed here by Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, I cannot imagine the piece interpreted more evocatively. One listens in a dream.
Gramophone Magazine, September 2012
As an introduction to a very fine composer this is hard to beat, one of this year's discoveries so far.
MusicWeb International, May 2012
It is as if Eccard's gentle contours needed no spotlight. [The ensemble] work on the basis that the great benefit of our appreciation will come from slow and paced familiarity - which is best served by equilibrium and gravitas; not by ostentation...On the other hand the singers never underplay nor hide the strengths of this music.
