Notes & Reviews:

March 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Xavier Montsalvatge, one of the most important Spanish composers of the 20th Century. His compositions have gained international recognition through the performances of his friends Victoria de los Angeles, Montserrat Caballé, Alicia de Larrocha and Pablo Casals. Included on this anniversary CD are some of his finest pieces: the famous "Cinco canciones negras", a poignant song cycle featuring infectious Latin American rhythms; the "Poema Concertante" first championed by the internationally acclaimed violinist Henryk Szeryng, and the "Concierto breve" for piano and orchestra, first premiered by Alicia de Larrocha - and a high point in Montsalvatge's Cuban influenced aesthetic. This recording has assembled three world-class soloists: American pianist Jenny Lin, mezzo-soprano Lucia Duchonová - previously Grammy-nominated for her Hänssler recording of the vocal works Joquin Turina - and American violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

Reviews

Wonderful Spanish classical album!!!
All the performers on this recording are top-notch! The first track, Poema concertante, is a story in itself, beautifully played by Rachel Barton Pine.
Lucia Duchonova has a warm, rich mezzo voice that is perfect for Cinco canciones negras. With a clarity of tone that doesn’t step over the boundaries of darkness, she sensitively interprets Montsalvatge’s songs. Her upper range has a lightness that might not be expected for a mezzo, but it creates a beautiful effect and contrast to her lower range without sounding inconsistent to her natural voice. In Concerto breve, Jenny Lin’s piano moves in and out of the orchestral texture seamlessly. Her expert playing is a joy to listen to. Overall, this is a wonderful recording of pieces by a fabulous composer. I personally love Spanish music, and this recording will please anyone with a love of classical and Spanish musics.
