Notes & Reviews:

Hanson's last two symphonies offer a fitting conclusion to his compositional career. Commissioned for the 185th anniversary season of the New York Philharmonic and dedicated to Leonard Bernstein, the romantic Sixth is cast in six continuous movements pervaded by a haunting three-note motif. The Seventh sets the poetry of Walt Whitman and reaffirms Hanson's Sibelian inheritance whilst proudly ending his own symphonic cycle in a blaze of glory. Lumen in Christo, which intriguingly bears the inscription "with variations on themes by Haydn and Handel," is a choral work for women's voices that sets sacred texts on the subject of light, ending in ethereal calm. "I found this to be an even more satisfying release than its predecessor, and it is sure to please those who have been enjoying Schwarz's Hanson survey." - Fanfare

MusicWeb International
The old passionate munitions and the aggressive air-burst energy are still there in the six-movement Sixth Symphony. Lumen in Christo growls with awe.

The re-release of the Delos International recordings of the complete symphonies of Howard Hanson concludes with the composer's final works in the form, played by the Seattle Symphony under Gerard Schwarz with as much warmth, skill and stylistic attentiveness as the earlier volumes received. The Hanson cycle was a significant accomplishment when originally released and remains one in Naxos' fine reissue.

David's Review Corner
Throughout this symphonic cycle the Seattle Symphony, inspired by their conductor, Gerard Schwarz, have gone way beyond the call of duty, and here they are joined by their excellent Chorale. Recorded in the 1980's and 90's they have previously appeared on the Delos label and have all the required impact.

Classic Music Sentinel
These previously available Delos recordings remain as impressive today as they did when first released in the early 90s, with a deep soundstage and wide dynamic range, and make for a memorable milestone in this ongoing Naxos series of American masterworks.
