Notes & Reviews:
American Record Guide, September / October 2012
This is a very attractive program. The gorgeous works by Smetana and Dvorak are reason alone to want this set. The Poem by Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) is an attractive trifle that was new to me. Leos Janacek's Violin Sonata is the major work in this form by any Czech composer. Erwin Schulhoff's Solo Violin Sonata is interesting and quirky, and Bohuslav Martinu's Five Madrigal Stanzas are some of the more enjoyable works of his that are inspired by madrigals. Josef Suk's Four Pieces, more harmonically advanced than anything his fatherin- law, Dvorak, ever wrote, are very fine, especially the piece marked Un poco triste.
