Jean-Philippe Rameau's modest output of works for keyboard (around 50 in total) are a crowning influence in French 18th-century instrumental music - summed up by one commentator as being "a paradigm of his mastery, for surveying it is to review many facets of his greatness". Famed for his additional contributions to French opera and for his advances in musical theory of the day, his keyboard works are beguiling in their mix of subtle beauty and virtuosity. The characterful works invoke both pictorial and poetic themes - a style that performer Jill Crossland describes as an "ability to characterize, to construct a miniature world in a few instants."

Rameau on the accordion is a totally different proposition. Aside from evoking rather strange mental images of absinthe, Edith Piaf, and smoke-filled bistros in Montmartre, there are issues concerning articulation and the basic sound of the instrument. The squeezebox nature of individual notes (wah-wah) is jarring in this music and precludes extended listening, at least for this listener. There's no denying that the young French accordionist Viviane Chassot is quite amazing in her virtuosity, and above all her adaptability. Her renditions of Les Cyclops and La Poule are thrilling by any standard - almost enough to make me forget that she's playing an accordion. About the best recommendation I can give is to spin this disc at your next cocktail party; your guests will be entranced - for a while, until the novelty wears off.
