Performer Composer

Notes & Reviews:

A recognized authority in 20th-century and contemporary music, Peter Hill turns for the first time on disc to another of his lifelong preoccupations: the music of J.S. Bach. On this new recording, Hill brings his customary scholarly acumen and crystalline musical intelligence to bear on Book II of the "48."

American Record Guide, November/December 2012
Hill takes a thoughtful, meditative approach to Bach's music. Sometimes, though, he surprises us with something more energetic. In the E-flat Prelude, for instance, he plays a special kind of spread chord to differentiate the bass line from the tenor. His C-sharp Fugue starts out gently but playfully schemes under the surface and sets the stage for the effusive roulades that take over the piece. In the B-minor Prelude I appreciated his restraint and found that it made the repeated plaints of the arpeggiated right hand melody more urgent and intense. Hill plays with sensitivity and elegance. It is a pleasure to visit his subtle musical world.
