Notes & Reviews:
Known primarily as an influential Russian poet who lived from 1872 to 1936, Mikhail Kuzmin was also a distinguished composer. He began to write his own texts for vocal pieces while a student and this helped him to develop his gifts as a poet. He fell into oblivion during the Soviet epoch so these world premiere recordings offer a welcome introduction to his music.
American Record Guide, July / August 2012
Kuzmin's music is well crafted but not especially memorable; it is ably performed by Shkritil and Serov, who collaborate here for at least the third time in this series. Serov, who teaches at the St Petersburg Conservatory and is artistic director of Northern Flowers, brings drama to the vigorous songs and tenderness to the gentler ones. Shkritil again shows a good range of vocal technique and sensual tonal color, but her voice is not as smooth here as it was in the outstanding Gavrilin CD (J/A 2009) recorded four years earlier in the same venue.
