Luigi Magistrelli studied clarinet at the Milan Conservatory. He has served as principal clarinet of the Sanremo Symphony Orchestra and performed as soloist with the orchestras of Pomeriggi Musicali, Angelicum, Magenta Symphony, Val Camonica and Radio of Milan. His discography includes 35 recordings. Now a professor at the Milan Conservatory, Mr. Magistrelli is chairman for Italy of the International Clarinet Society.

The Sussmayr is a fascinating effort that, while full of late classical spirit, takes a few chances, particularly with the brief cadenza between the orchestra's royal introduction and the energetic exposition. It is more instrumentally conceived than the Mozart, offering more finger fireworks, and it engages the soloist and the orchestra in more dialog. Keen listeners will have moments of deja vu - a fleeting recollection of the Mozart first movement, a brief parallel with III. Nevertheless, the movement is well written and deserves to be played and heard.
