Notes & Reviews:
The American mezzo-soprano Irene Dalis sadly passed away in December 2014 at age 89 in her hometown of San Jose, CA, where she'd founded Opera San Jose in 1984 following a sterling career of international proportions that included her time at the Met from the 1950s-70s. Featuring splendid sound, this unique live performance of Wagner's Parsifal from Bayreuth, 1961 with Hans Knappertsbusch, finds Ms. Dalis's Kundry teamed with Jess Thomas as Parsifal, plus a number of other stellar singing stars of time including Hotter, Neidlinger, London and Weber; truly a cast difficult to find nowadays!
American Record Guide, July/August 2015
As always, Parsifal under Knappertsbusch sounds just perfect. He was its only conductor at Bayreuth from 1951 to 1964 (aside from two brief stints by Cluytens and Krauss), and from the start he gets the colors exactly right. This is an absorbing Parsifal from start to finish.
Recording information: Festspielhaus, Bayreuth (1961).
