Notes & Reviews:

This collection contains all Debussy's works for orchestra as well as many orchestral arrangements of his piano music. Together these display a rich panorama of Debussian sound and a remarkable insight into the composer. Established arrangements by Debussy's contemporaries, including Ravel and Caplet, are complemented by more recent arrangements from composers such as Colin Matthews and Robin Holloway. The conductor Jun Märkl believes that Debussy 'set up a model of orchestration for the rest of the twentieth century' and it is with this conviction that he draws from the Orchestre National de Lyon such 'world-class playing' (American Record Guide).

"A richly satisfying collection, immaculately recorded, with its full measure of rarities." -Gramophone (On Disc #2)

"This conductor/orchestra partnership is clearly something out of the ordinary." -Fanfare (On Disc #3)

"These treasurable pieces have never sounded finer on disc." -Classic FM (On Disc #5)

Audiophile Audition
I strongly recommend this set for Debussy fans who want some new and undiscovered gems as well for anyone who would like to have all of Debussy's orchestral output - and then some - in one quite comprehensive, reasonably-priced package and with excellent performances.

The Northern Echo
This collection featuring the Orchestre National de Lyon and Jun MSrkl contains all Debussy's works for orchestra as well as many orchestral arrangements of his piano music. Together these display a rich panorama of Debussian sound and a remarkable insight into the composer. Hours of compelling listening. Representing true value for money, this set is a must.

The Mail on Sunday
This is a fine series... The Lyons orchestra are thoroughly idiomatic under their German music director Jun MSrkl, and the sound is first-class.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
I'd never gotten to hear the Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra before; it's an early work, finished in 1890, and I was surprised by resemblances to Rachmaninoff in the opening. Thibaudet plays grandly and warmly, charming the listener with the flourishes and runs. The slow part that begins II (it is in two movements) is gorgeous, a blend of solid piano chords and steamy strings, yet with a fairly light texture. I'm still not a fan of the clarinet and saxophone rhapsodies, but they are represented well. The Sacred and Profane Dances for harp and strings are a pleasant end to the set.

MusicWeb International
This is quite simply the most comprehensive recording ever made of Debussy's orchestral music, including many arrangements by other hands. Individual performers may have surpassed some of the items here, but Jun Märkl and his Lyon forces do the music proud.

Reviews

Press
“Jun Märkl creates a deeply sensual, headily intoxicating soundscape… His supple handling of phrasing, rhythm, texture and dynamics coalesces into ecstatic sequences…

No less remarkable is Märkl’s handling of the three ‘symphonic sketches’ that constitute La mer, throughout which he hypnotically translates the play of light on the water into musical sound so exotically enticing that it feels as though one could reach out and touch it.

One of the finest discs Naxos has ever released.”
