Notes & Reviews:

This collection completes the 27 sonatas by Padre Antonio Soler which make up his contribution to the Fitzwilliam manuscript. Nos. 1 - 15 are available on Naxos 8.572515. These bipartite sonatas contain prime examples of Soler's theories of modulation, from elegant "slow" passing between notes to "agitated" extremes of contrast. The result is constant surprise, both in spectacular technique and expressive depth. Award winning pianist Vestard Shimkus has been described as "a phenomenon" (conductor Paavo Järvi), "superb" (American Record Guide) and "inspired" (BBC.co.uk website).

David's Review Corner
He sees the works in purely piano terms without any reference to their sound on the harpsichord, and makes much use of pedals, bringing the type of dynamic range not available to that earlier instrument. That he is technically superbly equipped is evident in his very fast approach to the Seventeenth sonata, and the moments of drama he injects. ... I do enjoy his approach to the inward looking Twenty-fourth. Seen in isolation it showcases his agility, brilliance and clarity, points made clear by the excellence of the sound.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
The great range of colors and dynamics possible on the piano greatly enhance and complement the virtuosic and harmonically adventurous sonatas of Antonio Soler. Shimkus brings an attractive lyricism, a light touch, and a healthy dose of playfulness to Soler's music. I especially enjoyed his reading of Sonata No. 21 in C-sharp minor. He contrasts legato and staccato in a way that shows a real engagement with the strange and unfamiliar terrain of the key of C-sharp minor. His background in jazz and improvisation aids him in pieces like Sonatas No. 26 and No 27 in E minor, where bluesy chromatics and rhythmically angular writing create the opportunity for an exuberant, spontaneous interpretation.
