Notes & Reviews:

Frederick Delius's beautiful songs show his extraordinary gift for melody. John Ireland admired Delius enormously and his songs are inspired by a wide variety of literature, including his hugely popular setting of John Masefield's Sea Fever.Renowned cellist Julian Lloyd Webber celebrates both composers' remarkable melodic gifts in these sensitive arrangements, and pianist John Lenehan has received great acclaim for his Naxos recordings of Ireland's complete piano music.

"Hearing the songs of both composers without the texts, and played with such attention to contour and gradation, reminds us just how masterly and diverse both composers were in their art of the solo song...As the title of the disc suggests, this is an ideal collection to while away the summer evenings." -Gramophone

Gramophone
Julian Lloyd Webber brings an especially sensitive 'voice' to the Barjansky-Stradivarius cello... in the subtle changes of register and tone he lends to his own arrangements (all bar three), with the legerdemain of John Lenehan's delicate accompaniments. Hearing the songs of both composers without the texts, and played with such attention to contour and gradation, reminds us just how masterly and diverse both composers were in their art of the solo song... this is an ideal collection to while away the summer evenings.

The Northern Echo
Cellist Julian Lloyd Webber celebrates the works of Delius and Ireland in these stunning arrangements for piano and cello. He is joned by cellist Jiaxin Cheng and pianist John Lenehan. Highly recommended.

David's Review Corner
The performers have been champions of both composers, John Lenehan having recorded the complete piano music of Ireland for Naxos, and they have the instinctive nature and style of such music. The engineering ideally captures Lloyd Webber's generous tonal quality, and has achieved perfect balance between them. I hope this is just the beginning of Naxos's anniversary issues.

Daily Express
This selection of some of Delius' most beautiful songs arranged for cello and piano demonstrates the composer's gift for melody. His Serenade From Hassan is haunting. The cellists, who are husband and wife, explore the thoughtful elegance of John Ireland's songs, in particular Her Song.

Classic FM
By way of a tribute to both composers, cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber is releasing this sumptuous new album of cello and piano miniatures, for which he's accompanied by John Lenehan.

International Record Review
What emerges - as if we needed reminding - is the great gift of each man for melody: divorced from their texts, they work almost better in this form!

Reviews

Beautiful music
From the first track, it is clear that we are in for some beautiful music from Julian Lloyd Webber, who has arranged music of Delius and John Ireland for cello and piano. Particularly noteworthy is Deliusí Sunset demonstrating warm beautiful cello tone, Deliusí Loveís Philosophy featuring evocative cello playing and wonderful piano accompaniment up and down the keyboard, Irelandís Baby which has a warm you-canít-not-smile feel to it, Deliusí somber (and thoroughly enjoyable) 3 Ravens, and finishing off the recording is Irelandís In Summer Woods featuring Jiaxin Cheng on cello.

The pianist throughout is John Lenehan, and he does a fine job as an accompanist, offering depth of feeling and warmth in his playing.

Overall this is beautiful music played well, and if you are Delius fan or an Ireland fan, you will likely enjoy these arrangements very much. I am very pleased to have added this to my collection.
