Notes & Reviews:

MVSICA PERDVTA proved these manuscripts of the Baroque Cello Sonatas to be by the hand of Francesco Maria Zuccari, organist and Maestro di Capella of the Basilica of Assisi. The sonatas are very skillfully written for the cello, displaying at times an astonishing virtuosity. The present recording uses a rich and colorful basso continuo of violone, theorbo, double bass and harpsichord/organ.

International Record Review
The players of Musica Perduta are Italian musicians who play Baroque string instruments that are scrupulously restored in respect of original style bridges, fingerboards, bass bars, gut strings and tailpieces...this is an enterprising and skilful recording that should be of considerable interest to lovers of the cello and late-Baroque chamber music generally.

American Record Guide, July / August 2012
Francesco Maria Zuccari (1694-1788) was an organist and choirmaster at the Basilica of Assisi, among other places. These sonatas for cello and basso continuo are from a set of 10. As you may judge from his dates, he is a borderline composer between the baroque and classical styles and is interesting in his lively rhythms and light lyricism. These are quite virtuosic pieces with a conversational relationship between the solo and the basso continuo line that makes them sound quite original. These players make this work for them enjoyably. The early-music style is in charge in these readings. I only wish that the use of open strings and certain harshness in the sound had been less prominently displayed. You won't find these works elsewhere; and, in general, they are convincingly performed.
